Event Details

Engineering work is always a controversial subject, we need to maintain a safe railway but at the same time we have a greater than ever demand to run trains.

Paul Sutherland is the Route Operations and Planning Manager for the LNW route and he is tasked with the role of getting this balance right. He hopes to do this with a new concept he and his team are working on – BUBBLES!

Paul is a career railwayman, joining on the footplate back in 1985 at Crewe; from there he worked at depots in Garston & Huddersfield before becoming an instructor and traction inspector in Leeds. He then joined the BR graduate scheme working in Newcastle & Doncaster.

After this Paul headed back to the LNW, firstly as a Station Manager at Manchester Piccadilly then Stoke before becoming Group Station Manager. Upon privatisation, Paul’s role took him to railtrack with stints as a commercial manager and contracts manager.

1996 saw Paul move into the control at Crewe before the office relocated to Birmingham. Upon leaving Birmingham control he took up the post of Route Safety and Standards Manager, overseeing challenges such as operations during the West Coast Route Upgrade, tram operations in Nottingham and the introduction of Bi-Di at Leicester, a little over 18 years after the power signal box opened.

Another spell in the control followed before Paul headed off to new territories where the role of General Manager Sussex beckoned. By 2010 Paul was working for the national task force before becoming professional head of operations which saw him working with industry colleagues in implementing rule book changes such as permissive working for MPV’s.

Finally, in 2012, he took up his current role back on the LNW route. A vastly experienced man, this event promises to show you that there is another way to deliver the vast amount of engineering work on the LNW route due to be delivered in CP5
