Presentation by Patrick Hallgate; Route Managing Director, Western Route Network Rail, on the Great Western Main Line electrification scheme and associated signal sighting.

The upgrade of the Western Route is the most significant upgrade of the UK railway planned in the last 40 years with an investment of £79 million per route mile. Over the next 7 years the route will be completely modernised with electrification, new signalling, upgraded station and the introduction of new trains and the Crossrail service.

The talk will provide an insight into the approach which is being taken to the route modernisation, including new techniques for installation of overhead lines and route re-signalling. The approach to maintaining the railway will also be reviewed.

Refreshments will be provided.
