Located within the station throat at Lime Street Station, which opened in 1836, stands in a deep cutting, is Liverpool Lime Street signal box. Its Westinghouse Brake & Signal Co. Ltd. Style ‘L’ frame was  opened by British Railways on 25th January 1948. It was built to the London, Midland & Scottish Railway Type 13 design and was fitted with a 95 lever Westinghouse ‘L’ frame and is currently the last miniature lever frame operated by Network Rail. It is equipped with a Westinghouse Miniature Control Desk N-X panel. A replacement BR(LM) push-push N-X panel was installed in 1985, only to be superseded in 2008 by a TEW SM48 N-X panel in conjunction with the reinstatement of Olive Mount chord, providing additional access to/from the Port of Liverpool.

Lime Street signal box is scheduled to close in 2015, with all control being operated from a new Rail Operating Centre at Ashbury’s Manchester.
