It is often reported that Great Britain’s railways are safer now than they have ever been. But do we take this positive state of affairs for granted? Major accidents and incidents are now very rare here but recent accidents such as Ladbroke Grove, Potters Bar and Grayrigg are still very much in people’s minds. There have recently also been some serious incidents abroad like last July’s Chinese high speed crash and the closure last Sunday of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Line after faults were identified on the interface between the girder and the pillar at several places along the line.

All railway companies here operate with well-established safety policies and procedures and there are a multitude of support organisations that exist to underpin, monitor and enforce the safety of the system and its users. How do we work to ensure that safety is managed to an acceptable level? Should safety on Britain’s railways be “at any cost”? How do we know how safe our railways actually are? How do we learn from accidents and incidents, at home and abroad?

To consider such important questions we have gathered an expert panel of speakers:

 Wallace Weatherill, Operations Director, London Midland.
